Supplement FAQ: PheniTropic™

by Biotics Research

Why you may need PheniTropic™:

Vastly complex, the human nervous system coordinates innumerable processes via, amongst other things, a host of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are used for everything from signaling the heart and lungs to function, to enabling the body to sleep so regeneration and repair can occur. Emotions, affect, mood, appetite, and even energy levels are also regulated by neurotransmitters. Unfortunately, neurotransmitters operate within a very narrow confine, and their balance can be easily disrupted by a variety of factors including genetics, immune function, diet, stress, and general chemical exposure. Gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) is a primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. It is one of the ‘feel good’ neurotransmitters (Serotonin, Dopamine, GABA, Opioids and Norepinehprine) and it is commonly referred to as the anti-anxiety neurotransmitter.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends PheniTropic™ from Biotics Research:

Patients with low levels of GABA often complain of or present with severe hyperactivity, anxiety, irritability, altered mood, and sleep difficulties. PheniTropic™ contains beta-Phenyl-gamma-aminobutyric acid (Phenibut), a natural derivative of GABA. Phenibut has been demonstrated to have a calming effect and may assist in instances of stress, anxiety, and even the improvement of impaired sleep.1 However, due to its derivation of GABA, PheniTropic™ appears to have no significant negative side effects other than the potential for increased sleepiness in some individuals. These effects were not significant when compared with prescription sleep aids.2  PheniTropic™ should not be taken with alcohol, and it should not be used during pregnancy and/or lactation, or in conjunction with sedatives, MAOIs, sleep aids, or with anxiety or seizure medications.

I have used Pheni Tropic and it is amazing how it very rapidly calms the mind – brings everything down a notch – I have tried other forms of Gaba and this is the best one I have found.

What is the normal dosing on this supplement?

    • The recommended dose for PheniTropic™ is one (1) capsule taken one (1) to two (2) times each day as a dietary supplement or as otherwise directed by a healthcare professional.

Can I take this with warfarin, will it thicken my blood?

    • Court Vreeland, DC, DACNB #

To my knowledge, Phenibut has never been studied in combination with Warfarin. However, studies between other GABA drugs (including Baclofen, which is similar to Phenibut) and Warfarin have shown no interactions.

It is likely safe, but the best bet is to monitor closely at first by paying attention to their INRs. If those do not change, which I doubt they will, then they are safe.

For many years I have taken 200 mg of Dilantin and 200 mg of Prometrium for a Seizure disorder. Can I take this PheniTropic to help me sleep?

        • I will preface my recommendations with the advice that you talk to your prescribing doctor before embarking on a new regimen to help you sleep and taking PheniTropic™.

Dilantin and prometrium (progesterone) both have the net effect of reducing brain activity and therefore seizures. Prometrium works by stimulating the GABA A receptors in the brain and Dilantin by causing sodium to exit the neuron, thereby making it less likely to fire. Theoretically, these could be a problem together, but they clearly are not. Adding in another substance like PheniTropic™ that works by doing the same thing may act synergistically with both Dilantin and your Prometrium and magnify their effects. This is only theoretical. What I like to do is compare the drugs are you taking and instead of seeing if PheniTropic™ will interact, compare it with a drug called Baclofen. I do this for two reasons:

First, more is known about Baclofen and secondly, Baclofen is structurally and functionally very similar to PheniTropic™. According to my pharmaceutical interaction checker all three are safe to take together with interactions happening only very rarely and in very ill people. This comes with the caveat that you should always talk to your doctor first and my advice does not substitute for that. However, I generally do not recommend that people combine PheniTropic™ with any anti-seizure medications. gain, should you choose to do so, you need to be closely monitored by your doctor.

Can one take PheniTropic with very low doze of Xanax?

    • I do not recommend that patients take PheniTropic™ with Xanax. The potential for interaction is too high.

      Court Vreeland DC, DACNB

      • Kris #

What is the risk of combining it with Xanax? I am on 1 mg of Xanax twice a day and am weaning off little by little. I thought maybe this could be a good replacement. What kind of interactions can or have occurred?

        • I do not recommend taking PheniTropic™ with Xanax. The potential exists for them to act synergistically and the risk for side effect is higher when the two are combined.

PheniTropic™ is effective alone for helping people with anxiety.

What about taking with Buspirone and/or Clonazapam (0.5 mg-low dose)? I am currently taking both and would like to replace with something else, would this be a good possibility. Thanks!

    • It is up to your healthcare practitioner to determine the most effective product for your needs, as well as to determine if there are any contraindications with the medications you are currently taking. PheniTropic™ is typically recommended for stress and anxiety and may aid in improving sleep. It is contraindicated along with sedatives and MAOIs and should be used with caution when taken in conjunction with Taurine. I would recommend consulting with your healthcare provider to determine if this product will assist with your individual needs, as well as if it is contraindicated with the medications you are currently taking.

Are there any side affects to taking this? In your brain for instance.

    • There are no side effects indicated for PheniTropic™, however, it is not recommended to be used concurrently with MAOIs, sedatives, Taurine, or alcohol.

  8. eyahnna #

You mentioned in a couple of places not to take PheniTropic with Taurine but did not say why. Could you please explain. Thank you

    • Phenibut easily crosses the blood brain barrier, binds to GABA receptors, and may increase GABA levels. Taurine is a GABA agonist and may increase GABA levels by increasing GABA synthesis, preventing GABA breakdown, and blocking GABA reuptake. Both phenibut and taurine may enhance benzodiazepine binding to GABA receptors.

Because they work in a similar manner, they are not recommended in combination. However, some formulas combine Phenibut and Taurine. Thus, I would recommend discussing the use of both with your healthcare provider.

Can i take Phentrophic 3 hours after two glasses of wine i had at dinner?

    • Thank you for your question regarding our fine line of professional formulas. PheniTropic™ is not recommended in combination with alcohol, however, after 3 hours one glass of wine should be metabolized out of your system. I would recommend checking with your healthcare practitioner in this regard, as I cannot recommend that combination.

How long does phenitropic take to kick in? And how long do the effects last?

  11. Christy #

My holistic practitioner said this was a pre-gaba supplement. Would it work similarly to Lyrica or (pregabalin)? I have fibromyalgia, and am looking for a safer alternative to Lyrica. Would I be able to combine the 2 or should I stop Lyrica when I try this?

    • Thank you for your question regarding our fine line of professional formulas. Phenibut is a derivative of GABA, however unlike GABA, Phenibut does cross the blood-brain barrier, thus allowing a reduced effective dose as compared to GABA. (GABA does not cross the blood-brain barrier very effectively. You will have to discuss combining, and/or discontinuing your prescription medication with your prescribing physician, as I cannot advise you on that.

  12. I have just started taking PheniTropic for anxiety on the advice of my doctor. Like GABA, taking this supplement gives me bad headaches. He has recommended I take half the required dose and give my body time to adjust to it. I took one capsule (300mg) and the result was bad headaches. Is this common? I have read there are no known side effects. My doctor says I should give it time, give my body time to adjust to it. What are your thoughts? And thank you in advance for your reply.

    With sincere regards,

    Nina

I have taken Phenitropic and Depakote concurrently for several months without problems until I saw this page. Based on my time taking them together, is it safe to continue taking them together or should I discontinue? Based off of the info I’ve seen here, I chose to discontinue until I received a reply from you (and I’m exhausted and miserable!).

    • Biotics Research #

“I don’t generally recommend taking PheniTropic with drugs that also stimulate the GABA system as Depakote does. Without knowing what symptoms you have, I can’t be sure the PheniTropic would even be of any value. My advice is to talk to your doctor who recommended the PheniTropic. Taking both together may make you feel very sluggish and fatigued.” Dr. Court Vreeland

Can I take PheniTropic with Enalapril? I take PheniTropic at night and have been taking Enalpril in the mornings. I want to start taking Enalapril at night also because I just read it has better benefits if taken before bed.

    • Taking PheniTropic and Enalipril together has not been studied. However, based on reactions between Enalipril and drugs that are similar to natural PheniTropic there is little concern for interaction. You should make sure your primary care doctor is aware you are taking both, and speak with him/her about it. You may also consider speaking with him/her regarding the timing of the Enalipril.

    Hi,

You mentioned not to take Phenibut with MAO’s, etc.. What about St. John’s Wort, as it supposidely has mild MAO effect….

I’ve read that some people build tolerance to Phenibut after even 3 days. Probably not a good idea to keep increasing the dose, so would it be best to take frequent breaks from it? Although, some products work better after you use them for a while, such as Valerian, but not sure about Phenibut.

I’ve read some people complain of withdrawal symptoms from Phenibut, and had to take Benzo’s to help with withdrawal. I haven’t read too many reviews like this, but most people who have taken Phenibut products, whatever the brand, have used it for 1-2 years and probably haven’t come off it yet. How do you prevent withdrawal? Take breaks from it?

Are there other supplements that can help increase Phenibuts effectiveness like B6, Niacin, etc…?

Supposidely Phenibut crosses the blood brain barrier better than Gaba, yet, we get Gaba from foods, so it has to cross the blood brain barrier some how right? Or does the body manufacture it’s own gaba?

Can you mix Phenibut with Valerian, Hops, Theanine, for better sleep?

Can you take 5-htp or Tryptophan with Phenibut to help balance Serotonin/Gaba?

And final question…Does Phenibut actually increase stores of Gaba, or does it only stimulate Gaba receptors so the brain thinks you have more, which then overuse of it will cause your brain to stop making it’s own Gaba, which can lead to withdrawal symptoms, etc…?

    thanks.

    • You mentioned not to take Phenibut with MAO’s, etc.. What about St. John’s Wort, as it supposidely has mild MAO effect….
      Per Dr. Vreeland…
“I don’t recommend the two together, however, if the benefit will outweigh the risk, your doctor could monitor them together closely and it wouldn’t likely interact. ”

I’ve read that some people build tolerance to Phenibut after even 3 days. Probably not a good idea to keep increasing the dose, so would it be best to take frequent breaks from it? Although, some products work better after you use them for a while, such as Valerian, but not sure about Phenibut.
“The research states that tolerance is unlikely, however, anecdotal evidence supports the phenomenon. I’ve observed tolerance builds in some, not all, at doses of 1,200mg per day or greater. To avoid this always use the lowest effective dose and rotate on and off of phenibut. Take the effective dose for 5 days, then go off for 2 days. Repeat this cycle.”

      “Yes, see above.”

Are there other supplements that can help increase Phenibuts effectiveness like B6, Niacin, etc…?
“Phenibut is effective by itself. It does not need anything else.”

Supposidely Phenibut crosses the blood brain barrier better than Gaba, yet, we get Gaba from foods, so it has to cross the blood brain barrier some how right? Or does the body manufacture it’s own gaba?
“GABA does not cross the blood brain barrier. We make our own GABA from the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate.”

Can you mix Phenibut with Valerian, Hops, Theanine, for better sleep?
“You can, however, it should be used with caution together. They may act synergistically.”

Can you take 5-htp or Tryptophan with Phenibut to help balance Serotonin/Gaba?
“Yes, you may take those two together.”

And final question…Does Phenibut actually increase stores of Gaba, or does it only stimulate Gaba receptors so the brain thinks you have more, which then overuse of it will cause your brain to stop making it’s own Gaba, which can lead to withdrawal symptoms, etc…?
“Phenibut does not increase stores of endogenous GABA and should only be used as long as low GABA levels are suspected.”

Hi, I know people have already asked about Xanax interactions but I’m not sure I saw what the exact side effects would be if you took a small dosage while taking PheniTropic. Also, if I were to stop taking PheniTropic and decided instead to take a very small dosage of Xanax again, how long would I have to wait to make sure it’s safe to do so (and out of my system)? Thanks.

    • Xanax and PheniTropic may act synergistically meaning one may increase the effect of the other. Taking both together is not recommended and may result in an increase in the side effects listed for Xanax. Very little phenibut (the active ingredient in PheniTropic) is detectable in animals 180 minutes after giving it to them. It is metabolized very quickly. It is important to note that you should be followed closely by a doctor when using both Xanax and PheniTropic.

      Court Vreeland DC, DACNB

      • Max #

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it. To clarify, if I stop using PheniTropic for, let’s say, 3-4 days, is it out of my system enough to be able to take Xanax again?

        • Yes, after 3-4 days, PheniTropic will be out of your system. However, everyone is different, and this advice shouldn’t substitute for being followed by your doctor.

Is it safe to take 300 mg of Phenibut with 100 mg of Lamotrigine?

  18. Pat #

I’ve been taking Gabapentin (100mg 3xs a day) for neuropathy – side effect from chemo. I took two 300 mg of PheniTropic last night before bed time, and I found myself having a bit of an issue walking. I really
felt “drugged” this AM, and still do going on close to noon. Did not know about not mixing anti-seizure meds with this sleeping aide. Also, did not know I should probably not take two at a time. Right? I do have a serious problem sleeping.

  19. Donna #

I took one 300 mg dose of phenobit directed by my doctor and I have been having two days of what feels like withdrawls that include that panicky shaking sensation
Does anyone know how long it stays in the system and if it will show up I’m a drug test
