Supplement FAQ: De-Stress™

Why you may need De-Stress™:

Stress and anxiety have become common side-effects of modern day living, and are especially prevalent during this time of year.  De-Stress is a patented, all natural, specially produced milk protein hydrolysate, concentrating a specific decapeptide that demonstrates significant anxiolytic activity, as evidenced by several double- blind, placebo controlled human trials.  Additionally, the De-Stressnatural decapeptide has been tested for three major side effects generally attributed to benzodiazepines (anxiety management, i.e. Valium); dependence, memory loss and tolerance. De-Stress is an easy, natural way to reduce your stress and anxiety levels and has been shown to be safe, as confirmed by the Irwin test showing a satisfactory safety panel.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends De-Stress from Biotics Research:

De-Stress demonstrates anxiolytic activity.  Double blind human studies have been performed using De-Stress, measuring physical and psychological responses to stress.  Included were measurements of cortisol, ACTH levels, and systolic blood pressure.  In all cases, De-Stress fared favorably against controls in response to stress.  Lastly, it should be noted that while De-Stress is a milk-derived product, it is a hydrolysate, therefore it can often be used successfully with patients with dairy sensitivities.

Supplement FAQ: Carbamide Plus™

Why you may need Carbamide Plus™:

Despite their small size; only 4.5” long and weighing in at 4-6 ounces each, the kidneys are a remarkably important organ.  In fact, they receive greater blood flow than the brain, the liver, or even the heart.  All in all, they are responsible for redistributing and reabsorbing over 99% of the blood volume in the body.  Over 26 million Americans over the age of 20 have chronic kidney disease, with diabetes being the leading cause, uncontrolled or poorly controlled blood pressure being the second leading cause.  Healthy kidneys not only filter blood and regulate waste and toxins, but they maintain a healthy balance of the body’s fluid levels and regulate important hormones, including those that promote bone health, produce red blood cells, and those that regulate normal blood pressure.  Therefore, maintaining optimal kidney health should be an important priority for overall health concerns.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends Carbamide Plus™ from Biotics Research:

Carbamide Plus™ supplies USP grade carbamide, fortified with celery seed extract, Uva ursi, marshmallow, and vitamin B6, in a base of Argizyme™.  Carbamide (urea) is a water soluble, non-toxic substance that is naturally produced in the liver and is utilized in the body for a number of processes, most notably – nitrogen excretion.  In addition to its role of transporting nitrogen waste, it plays a critical role in the re-absorption of water and key minerals from excreted urine.  This mechanism is important for maintaining hydration and healthy blood pressure.  Celery seed extract supplies polycetylenes, coumarins, and phtalide – a compound which not only relaxes smooth muscle in vessel walls (positively impacting blood pressure), but blocks the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase, which is required for the production of stress hormones that are known to restrict blood vessels and blood flow.  Uva ursi is a natural diuretic and antiseptic herb.  Marshmallow is included for its soothing properties and its ability to support healthy mucous membranes.  Vitamin B6 (as P-5-P) is a coenzyme for over 100 enzymes and is required for a wide range of biochemical reactions. These herbal extracts and nutrients are all supplied in a base of Argizyme™, an enzymatically processed organic beet and Tillandsia (Silver Moss) formula that is rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, trace elements, and antioxidants.

Supplement FAQ: NeuPerzine™

Why you may need NeuPerzine™:

Vastly complex, the human nervous system coordinates innumerable processes via, a host of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters.  Neurotransmitters are used for everything from signaling the heart and lungs to function, to enabling the body to sleep so regeneration and repair can occur.  Emotions, affect, mood, appetite, and even energy levels are also regulated by neurotransmitters.Unfortunately, neurotransmitters operate within a very narrow confine, and their balance can be easily disrupted by a variety of factors including genetics, immune function, diet, stress, and general chemical toxicity.  NeuPerzine™ contains huperzine A, a powerful acetylcholinesterase inhibitor which makes acetylcholine more readily available in the brain, and according to published research, can enhance memory.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends NeuPerzine™ from Biotics Research:

When healthcare practitioners have determined that a patients’ neurotransmitters are imbalanced, they may choose to address it in a variety of ways including diet, exercise, and strategic supplementation.  NeuPerzine contains a natural compound extracted from the Huperzia serrata plant.  This natural compound has been shown to enhance memory in students1, while pharmaceutical derivatives of this natural compound are currently under study for the treatment of Alzheimers2.  In fact, huperzine A compares favorably to synthetic acetylcholinesterase inhibitors in use with the additional benefit of being an antioxidant and neuroprotective.  It has been found to be protective against beta amyloid-mediated oxidative stress and apoptosis.  It supports general cognition, global clinical status, behavioral disturbance and functional performance.  Once again, Biotics Research brings to you supplements representing “The Best of Science & Nature”.

Holiday Weight Gain…Fact or Fiction?

Every year I hear individuals expressing concern about gaining weight during the Thanksgiving to New Year holiday season. I know I gain a few pounds during the holidays. So how big of a problem is weight gain during this time of year? A quick search of the literature found numerous articles written on this topic. These articles all had one thing in common; they all referenced a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine March 23, 2000 titled “A Prospective Study of Holiday Weight Gain”. To my surprise, the average holiday weight gain is much less than commonly assumed. On average, the study participants gained 0.48 kg (1.06 pounds) during the holiday season as compared to the rest of the year. That’s the good news. The bad news is that “Since this gain is not reversed during the spring or summer months, the net 0.48-kg weight gain in the fall and winter probably contributes to the increase in body weight that frequently occurs during adulthood”. The researchers also found that the study participants with the greatest weigh gain were more likely to be overweight or obese than those who had the least weight gain.

Another study published online December 28, 2006 in Nutr Metab (Lond). 2006; 3: 44 looked at weight change for 82 healthy male and female college age subjects during the Thanksgiving through New Year holiday season. This study found that body weight remained unchanged over the course of the holiday season. Here again this is good news. The bad news, however, was a shift in body composition. A significant increase in percent body fat and fat mass was observed during the holiday season. The study points out that “With recent evidence showing marked morbidity and mortality to be associated with increased body fat (particularly abdominal adiposity), results from this study suggest body weight alone may underestimate the potentially deleterious effects of the holiday season”.

On the surface, the minimal weight gain during the holiday season doesn’t seem to be much of a “big deal”. It’s the accumulative effect over the years and the shift in body composition to increased percent body fat and fat mass that we need to be concerned about. One way to address this concern and rejuvenate your body after the holidays is to do Dr. Abbas Qutab’s Easy 3-Step Bio-Detoxification Program. The 3 – Step Detox Program cleanses your body and is designed to energize, revitalize and repair. I have been doing the 3 – Step Detox Program following the fall and winter holiday season for the past five years and have consistently been able to drop unhealthy pounds and excess body fat following the holidays. My next detox begins January 2, 2012. I challenge those reading this blog to join me with a detox program of your own for a healthier and happy New Year.
