Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a hormone that is released by the pineal gland and the skin. In one randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial designed to evaluate the effects of melatonin on sleep and behavioural disorders, researchers found that melatonin supplementation significantly improved sleep quality. Their mood-related disorders also improved. The researchers concluded that “melatonin administration significantly improves sleep and, therefore, behavior.”
